Wakayama Cloud Cotton is a cotton-blend fleece knitted on loop-wheel (吊編) machines in Wakayama, Japan. The blend is 97% cotton and 3% polyurethane. The polyurethane component provides a small degree of recovery without changing the character of the cotton surface. Loop-wheel knitting is a slow process — approximately one metre of fabric per hour, roughly one-twentieth of the speed of modern equipment. The yarn is fed by gravity and the fabric accumulates under its own weight, without mechanical tension. The result is a fabric with more loft and air in its structure than standard fleece, and a surface that stays soft with regular wear and care. Wakayama Cloud Cotton is made for pieces that should feel substantial without feeling heavy: hoodies, sweaters, and sweatpants with a cloud-like softness against the body.
