Products and materials
What materials does Mercer St. use?
We work with natural fibres: cotton, silk, cashmere, and alpaca, alongside carefully chosen blends. Each material is chosen for how it feels, how it behaves in wear, and how it responds to care over time. You can read more about each material on the material pages, and specific fibre details are noted on each product page.
What is Wakayama Cloud Cotton?
Wakayama Cloud Cotton is a fluffy cotton-blend fleece used for soft everyday pieces such as hoodies, sweaters, and sweatpants. The blend is 97% cotton and 3% polyurethane, with the small amount of polyurethane added for recovery. Wakayama refers to the knitting location, not where the cotton is grown. Product-specific details are noted on each product page.
Are your products suitable for sensitive skin?
We select natural fibres with attention to surface quality and yarn specification. Some customers with sensitive skin find natural fibres more comfortable than synthetic alternatives, though individual responses vary. If you have a known fibre sensitivity or allergy, we recommend checking the fibre content on the product page before purchasing. We do not use the term “hypoallergenic” for any of our products.
Do your products contain synthetic fibres?
Some products use a small percentage of synthetic fibre — typically for structural purposes such as elastane in socks, polyurethane for recovery in cotton-blend fleece, or a stabilising blend in knitwear. Fibre content is listed on each product page and on the care label. If you are looking for a specific fibre composition, the product page is the most reliable source.
What does “natural fibres” mean in practice?
It means the primary fibre in each garment comes from a natural source — plant or animal — rather than a petroleum-based synthetic. Some pieces are blends that include a small amount of synthetic fibre for a specific function, which is always noted on the product page. Natural fibres have different care requirements and different properties in wear than synthetic fibres.
Will the fabric pill?
Pilling is a natural behaviour of many fibres, particularly fine protein fibres such as cashmere and alpaca. It occurs when short fibres work their way to the surface and form small balls. It is not a sign of poor quality. The degree to which a fabric pills depends on the fibre, the yarn construction, and how the garment is worn and washed. Care guidance on each product page notes where pilling is a relevant consideration.
Sizing and fit
How do I find my size?
Each product page includes a size guide with measurements. We recommend measuring yourself and comparing against the garment measurements rather than relying on your usual size in other brands, as fit varies by garment type and construction. The size guide is also available at size guide.
Do your garments run true to size?
Fit varies by garment. Each product page notes the fit — whether a piece is cut close, relaxed, or oversized — and includes the measurements of the model and the size they are wearing where available. We recommend reading the fit notes on the product page before ordering.
I am between sizes. Which should I choose?
The product page fit notes will usually indicate whether a garment runs small or large, and whether sizing up or down is advisable for a particular fit. If you are unsure, contact us at hello@mercer-st.com and we will help where we can.
Are socks one size?
The Mercer St. cotton socks are available in two sizes: S/M (22–24.5 cm foot length) and M/L (25–27 cm foot length). Measure your foot length and refer to the size guide on the product page.
Care
How should I wash my Mercer St. pieces?
Care instructions vary by garment and fibre. The care label on each garment is the authoritative source. Product pages also include specific care guidance. As a general principle: natural fibres respond better to gentle washing at low temperatures, and most fine-knit garments should be laid flat to dry rather than hung or tumble-dried. Always follow the care label.
Can I machine wash cashmere and alpaca?
Some fine-knit garments can be machine washed on a wool or delicate cycle at a low temperature with a gentle detergent. Others should be hand washed only. The care label on each garment specifies the correct method. Do not machine wash a garment that the care label specifies as hand wash only.
How should I store fine-knit garments?
Fold rather than hang. Hanging a fine-knit garment can cause it to stretch over time. Store in a cool, dry place. For longer-term storage, a breathable bag or box helps protect against dust and moths. Protein fibres — cashmere, alpaca — can be affected by moths; cedar or lavender can be used as a natural deterrent.
What should I do if my cashmere or alpaca garment pills?
Pilling is normal and can be managed. A cashmere comb or fabric shaver can be used to remove pills without damaging the fabric. Use gentle strokes on a flat surface.
Can I iron my Mercer St. pieces?
Ironing guidance is noted on the care label. Many fine-knit and jersey garments respond better to steaming than direct ironing. If ironing is appropriate, use a low temperature and a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Always follow the care label.

Production information
Where are your products made?
Production details are noted on each product page. We do not make a blanket claim about production location across the entire range.
What does “Made in Japan” mean when it appears on a product page?
When a product page notes that a piece is made in Japan, it means the garment was substantially manufactured in Japan. It is a production location, not a quality certification. We note production details on individual product pages only where we have confirmed the information. We do not use “Made in Japan” as a site-wide claim.
Do you work directly with manufacturers?
Where possible, we work closely with the people and suppliers who understand the material and the production process. We do not make specific claims about supply chain structure on individual products without confirmation.
