About Mercer St.

A small collection. A clear point of view.

Mercer St. began from a personal frustration: the difficulty of finding simple everyday pieces where the material, cut, and construction all felt considered.

Mercer St. is a small clothing brand focused on everyday essentials made from natural fibres. We are not a seasonal brand. We do not produce collections for the sake of newness. We make a small number of pieces that we believe are worth making, and we try to make them as well as we can.

The name comes from the Old French mercier — a dealer in fine cloth, a person who understood material before anything else. That is the orientation we try to bring to everything we make.

Material first. Everything else follows.

We start with the fibre. Before we think about silhouette, colour, or price, we ask: what is the right material for this piece? What does it need to do? How should it feel against the skin? How should it behave after a year of regular wear?

From there, we work with suppliers who understand the material as well as we do. We produce in small quantities. Where possible, we work closely with the people and suppliers who understand the material and the production process.

Some of our pieces are made in Japan, where the production process and the specific expertise required to work with the material are available. We note this on each product page where it applies. We do not apply "Made in Japan" as a blanket claim.

Less, but better.

We believe that most people own too many clothes and not enough good ones. We are not trying to add to the noise. We are trying to offer a small number of pieces that are worth buying, worth keeping, and worth wearing every day.

We are not a sustainable brand in the marketing sense of the word. We try to make choices that are reasonable: natural fibres where appropriate, small production runs, no unnecessary packaging. We do not make claims we cannot support.
